What a sauna costs, by brand: median prices across 3,775 listings

"How much does a sauna cost" gets answered with a range so wide it is useless. We hold 3,775 products and 4,454 retailer listings pulled from seven US retailer catalogs, so here is the median for every brand we carry enough of to be worth reporting. Prices are list prices excluding freight and installation — how we collect them.

Read this table wrong and it will mislead you

The obvious conclusion — Dundalk is a premium brand and Harvia is a budget one — is not what the numbers say.

Harvia's median is $2,080 because Harvia mostly sells heaters, and a heater is a component. Dundalk's median is $8,006 because Dundalk mostly sells cabins, and a cabin is a building. The two medians are not measuring the same kind of object, so comparing them ranks product categories rather than brands.

The giveaway is in the last two columns. Harvia runs from $122 to $16,055 — a 133-fold range inside one brand. That is a catalog containing both a control knob and an outdoor cabin, and no single number describes it.

The same trap catches brand-versus-brand comparisons. Our HUUM against Harvia breakdown only works because it holds the product type still and compares heaters to heaters.

The number that is actually useful

Pick the thing first, then look at the brands that make it.

• Heaters cluster low. Harvia and Scandia medians sit near $2,000–$2,900. A Harvia Cilindro runs $1,181 to $1,625 depending on output.
• Cabins and barrels cluster high. Dundalk, Finnmark, Thermory and Almost Heaven medians sit between $6,700 and $8,100.
• Auroom sits alone at the top with an average listing above $21,000, because it sells almost nothing but large cabins — and not one of them is priced the same at every store.

Budget against the category you want, then use the part number to find what that specific unit costs across retailers. The gap between two stores on one identical product is frequently larger than the gap between two brands' medians, and it is the one you can actually do something about — including which retailer is cheapest, which changes by brand.

The verdict: spend your shopping effort where it actually pays

The useful question is not which brand is cheapest. It is whether the brand you want is one where shopping around changes the price at all — and that varies enormously.

We checked how often each brand's products carry an identical price at every retailer that stocks them:

If you want HUUM, Saunum or Finnmark, stop comparing prices. They are the same everywhere, near enough that the exceptions are rounding. Buy from whichever retailer gives you the best freight quote, the shortest lead time, or the person most likely to answer the phone when something arrives damaged. Hunting for a better number is time you will not get back.

If you want Auroom, Scandia or Golden Designs, the retailer is most of the decision. Not one product from those three is priced the same at every store. The spread on a single Auroom Lumina between two retailers is $8,390 — larger than the entire distance between the most and least expensive brand medians in the table above. Choosing the store carelessly costs more than choosing the brand carelessly.

Harvia is the one to check model by model. At 57% it is genuinely split: about half the range is locked and half is not, so the answer that applied to your last purchase will mislead you on the next one. The Cilindro is a clean example — the 6 kW is identical at six retailers, and the 9 kW is not.
